What

What is a Wapapura Recording?

A Wapapura recording is a union of three basic elements:

Wapapura is not focused on one type of music, but rather on a type of musician.  Musicians that understand our intentions and are looking for the experience of playing and recording their music in the Wapapura way for the benefit of an environmental cause.  We follow Fair Trade practices in our relationship with the musicians.  Without their music none of this would be possible so they are present and participatory in the entire process of the making of the album.

The CDs produced by Wapapura revolve around the experience of recording in a carefully chosen environment.  The intention is that the music interacts with the environment and becomes an offering to the living space around us.  We prefer it to be a natural setting, but do not limit ourselves to this as there are many things to consider for each different recording.  A location is chosen depending on the type of music to be recorded, the logistics of transporting the instruments being used, and the climate realities of the time of the recording.  No matter where we record, we only use the energy from the Sun to power our equipment.  This way we always know where the energy for our gear is coming from and making our impact on the enviroment minimized to footprints and echoes.

This is where we channel the energy of the music to support projects moving us to a healthier and more conscious human relationship with the natural world. Each recording is linked with a specific project of an environmental non-profit with whom we have established direct relations with.   They will receive donations from the download of the music to support their work.  The amount of the donation depends on each different album and the agreement with the musicians.

When these three pieces are in place, a Wapapura Album is made

How this site it works?

  • We make a recording and put it on this site.
  • We link the album with a specific project of an environmentally oriented non-profit
  • You can listen to samples from the album and if you like it, you can download it
  • Your download becomes a donation to the non-profit linked with the album
  • There is a minimum amount for the download and an amount that Wapapura keeps for our operations.  The rest goes to the non-profit
  • The amount for Wapapura always remains the same, so if you are feeling generous you can donate as much as you want knowing that everything past the amount Wapapura keeps is going to support the cause linked with the album
  • For most recordings the musicians have donated their music that is put on this site.  In the case they are to receive part of the download this will be stated for that album.  We follow Fair Trade policies with our relationship with the musicians and they are a crucial part of the entire recording and editing process.  Without them, none of this would be possible, as there would be no music!

Why Solar?

Solar Power in the beginning was just a simple solution.  A way power our recording gear where there is no other source of energy in a non-impactful way to the environment.

We soon realized the value of knowing where all our energy is coming from to power our recordings.  So we even began to use Solar Power where we could have plugged in to the wall sockets.  Doing this also makes us aware of how much power we have available and how much we are consuming.  Adding an energy consciousness to our recordings that limits our consumption to more reasonable levels.

With many recordings behind us, we are very proud to know exactly where our power has come from along with the awareness it has given us of our energy consumption to realize our projects.

We are not prentending to say here that Solar Power is the ecological panacea or even completely environmentally friendly.  We are fully aware of the ecological impact that the making of the Solar equipment has on the Earth.  But of the options available to us to have the least amount of impact on the environment where we are recording, at this time Solar works best.  Especially here in southern Spain where there is one thing we are not lacking, and that is time with the Sun.
